Training Your Chihuahua

Training your Chihuahua is something that is not only beneficial for you, but also for him.

Let’s face it. When you first get this precious, tiny dog, it’s hard to believe that he will need to learn any obedience at all. After all, he’s small enough to simply pick up if he’s misbehaving, right? Wrong!

Chihuahuas are known for being a bit stubborn so it is best to start working with him as soon as you bring him home, regardless of whether he is a puppy, or already grown. Chihuahua training, Chocolate and white long hair Chihuahua

If you make his training enjoyable and fun, he will become eager to please you.

I’ve also found that an older, stubborn Chi learns really well, using a food treat as a reward.

It is always best to train a dog with praise being the motivating factor, but if it takes a special snack or two to help his progress, then feel free to do so.

Just make sure that his snacks are in combination with praise, so that the snacks can be phased out in time.

The most basic Chihuahua training will involve housebreaking and for those interested, this can be successfully achieved by him using a litter box.

Leash training is very important and will not only accelerate the housebreaking process, but will be very useful when you take him places with you.

Training your Chihuahua as to what is allowed to be chewed on and what isn’t will be of the utmost importance, as it is amazing what those tiny little teeth can quickly ruin!

Using a crate is always a good idea. It helps the housebreaking process, prevents unwanted chewing, and gives Chihuahuas a “safe haven” for when they get overwhelmed.

And then of course, is the fun stuff! Training your Chihuahua to sit, beg, and dance is entertaining for you, but he will love it as well, since Chihuahuas love to be center stage! They are quite the little show-offs!
