Tick Bites and What You Need to Know

Tick bites are not just annoying, they can actually be quite dangerous.

From transmitting Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever to Lyme Disease, the bites from ticks, truly do give us a reason to be concerned.

They survive by feeding off the blood supply of other mammals.

They do not hop or fly, they crawl, and sometimes they also drop off of a branch or a twig onto their victim.

The problem is that you can not always feel them crawling on you, and often do not feel their bites.

Many times they are not discovered until you actually see one that has already attached to you or your dog.

If you want to see tick photos of a person being bitten, I do have a few photos here.

There are various types of ticks, but only one carries Lyme Disease and that is the black-legged variety.

Though there is a way to remove ticks from your dog, using a preventative treatment to help keep your Chihuahua safe from their bites, would be much more effective.

Since ticks can easily hide in the fur of your pet, it really isn't practical to think you can spot them and simply remove them.

Along with people, dogs can also get diseases from these parasites.

Some types are quite small and can be easily overlooked.

It takes roughly 48 hours for an attached tick to infect your dog, so using a preventative treatment that kills them within this time frame, will help keep your dog safe.

When removing ticks from a person or from your dog, always check to make sure that the head of the tick comes out, along with its body.

There are not many immediate reactions to tick bites, and any related health issues may not show up for several days to several weeks, from when you actually got bit.

Many symptoms usually take awhile to appear and can mimic other illnesses. If you do get sick, you need to let your doctor know that you were bitten and when.

If you develop a mark that resembles a bullseye after any tick bites, you will want to see your doctor right away. This can be a tell-tale sign of the beginning of Lyme Disease.

Several years ago, I got bit, and the next day I had the bullseye mark. When I called my doctor, he wanted to see all bites immediately, and then put me on antibiotics for a few weeks.

Totally eradicating your environment of ticks is impossible to do, but there are a few ways to minimize their habitat and to keep them off of your dog, and out of your house.
