Teething in Puppies

What Helps Puppy Teething Pain?

Teething in puppies starts about 4 months of age.

Depending upon the personality of individual puppies, this can go unnoticed.

Puppy teeth are temporary teeth that are sometimes called milk teeth. You can usually feel them in the puppy's mouth between 3 to 4 weeks of age.

Puppy teething starts when these teeth start to get replaced with their permanent adult incisors.

Some people believe that excessive puppy chewing is a sign of teething in puppies, but I am not convinced of this.

The fact is, puppies love to chew irregardless of whether they are cutting teeth or not!

Chewing teaches them about their environment, develops their facial muscles, and keeps their teeth and gums healthy.

Do not make the mistake of blaming puppy biting on teething puppies, as it is not the same thing, or the cause of them doing this.

Puppy biting is exactly what it sounds like and needs to be stopped!

True signs of teething may include loss of appetite, swollen gums, and sometimes blood on objects, that your Chihuahua has been chewing on.

For puppy teething pain, there are a few different things you can do.

First, even if your Chihuahua has days when her appetite is down, continue to feed her dry puppy food, not moist food.

Not only is dry food best for her teeth and gums, the actual “crunching” on it will help her teeth to loosen as they as suppose to.

You can buy teethers that are designed to be frozen for puppies to chew on.

Or you can take an old dishtowel, wet it down, twist and knot it and throw it into the freezer for her to later chew on. This can be used several times by simply rinsing it out and refreezing it.

There's also the option of giving her ice to chew on. Many Chihuahuas love this!

Make sure she has a large variety of dog toys to chew on, not only for her teeth, but for her chewing stage.

And remember, not all puppies will show signs of being bothered by their teeth, but if yours does, it will be over almost as soon as it starts!
