Trying to stop puppy chewing can be very frustrating at times!
Puppies not only love to chew, it is actually good for them. It helps their teeth, gums, and facial muscles to develop, and they learn more about their world through chewing.
However, the amount of damage they can do is astonishing!
Don't be fooled into thinking that due to the small size of your Chihuahua, that she won't do much damage!
Trust me, their teeth are every bit as sharp as any larger sized dog!
Never leave her unattended and when you can not watch her closely, make sure she is in a crate, as this will help reduce furniture, floors, and shoes from being destroyed!
The trick to how to stop your puppy's chewing on your belongings, is to give her plenty of acceptable things to chew on, while trying to teach her what isn't allowed. A huge task for sure!
There are dozens of various dog chew toys on the market, but the key is to make sure your Chihuahua has many different options from which to choose.
Rawhide, cow hooves, plush dog toys, dog ropes, and soft and hard rubber toys.
When your puppy is chewing on an unacceptable item, tell her “no” while clapping your hands once or twice to get her attention. Then replace what she has with one of her toys, and praise her at the time you make the switch.
If she has a favorite spot to chew on, such as a cabinet, or furniture, then spray that with Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray.
I have used this for many years and it really does a great job. It leaves a nasty taste in the dog's mouth, and they usually will not go back to that spot again.
Occasionally, you may have to re-spray it a few days later, depending on how stubborn your Chihuahua is!
It seems that about the time your Chihuahua is finally understanding what is acceptable and what isn't, then her puppy teething stage starts and chewing again becomes an issue.
Consistency, using a crate, replacing forbidden objects with proper dog chew toys, and occasionally using Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray will go a long way in stopping puppy chewing.
