The short haired Chihuahua is technically called a smooth coat Chihuahua. They are the most popular in this breed and also the most recognizable. Many people are surprised to learn that the short coat actually sheds more than the
long haired Chihuahuas
do.
What surprises people even more is to learn that the smooth coats come in two different types.
The fur on a smooth coat Chihuahua lies close to her body and has a soft, glossy texture.
However, some smooth coat Chihuahuas also have an undercoat, in which the overall coat will be thicker and there may be a ruff on her neck.
The fur is coarser and has almost a terrier type feel to it. This particular coat type seems to shed more than the others, and you will find little, tiny hairs all over your furniture!
They are both still considered smooth coats. AKC only specifies 2 coat types. The Smooth and the Long.
They are all still genetically the same breed and many litters can have all of these various types of coats born into the same litter, including long haired Chihuahuas and smooths together.
There is some debate over the personalities between the short and the long coats. Some people believe that the long haired are a little more easy going, but personally, I've never seen any difference.
