Removing Ticks From Dogs

How to Remove Ticks

Unfortunately, sometimes no matter how hard you try, you may still get a couple of ticks on your dog.

Removing ticks from dogs isn't hard to do, but it does require a steady hand.

The best way to remove ticks is by using a pair of tweezers, although you can use your fingernails, if necessary.

Pull back your Chihuahua's fur that is surrounding the tick, so that you can easily see where the tip of the tick's head is embedded.

Slide one side of the tweezers up under the bottom side of the tick, with the other side of the tweezers on top of it.

Make sure that the tweezers are right up against the part of the tick's head that is under the skin.

Then simply apply a little bit of pressure as you slowly and steadily pull backwards.

The slow, steady, backwards motion will force it to come out with its head still attached to its body.

If you just try to jerk the tick out quickly, this can sometimes cause the head to remain inside of your dog, rather than removing the whole body, and that in turn, can cause an infection.

If you have an engorged tick, removal is still the same, but you must be a bit more careful so you do not crush its body.

Removing ticks from people can be done slightly differently than the way you do it for a dog's tick removal.
