The truth about teacup, toy, and miniature Chihuahuas
We've all seen them advertised, but does a miniature teacup Chihuahua truly exist?
And if they do exist, are you sure you really want one?
Chihuahuas are already the smallest breed of dog. Many people do not realize just how tiny an average Chihuahua is.
To be eligible at an AKC sporting event, they must be under 6 pounds in weight.
6 pounds is barely over a bag of sugar!
Unfortunately, some breeders will say or do anything to make some extra cash from their puppies, by slapping fancy labels on them.
When Chihuahuas are born, they weigh between 4 and 6 ounces, and are roughly 2 pounds when they are weaned and ready for their new homes.
Since they look so incredibly tiny, it's easy to believe that this pup is not going to get much bigger than it already is, because it is hard for the mind to envision that.
However, they will continue to grow for several more months and are still internally growing to a year of age.
You may later be surprised to see that your mini Chihuahua actually grew up and became well over 6 pounds in weight. The breeder is banking on the fact that by this time, you will already be in love with your dog and won't mind what size it is.
On the flip side, there are puppies that can be smaller than others. This happens in every breed of dog.
To deliberately keep smaller than normal dogs and breed them together to try and make them even tinier is a very dangerous practice.
You are simply asking for health problems, but because of the high demand for a so called "miniature teacup Chihuahua", this is unfortunately what many people are doing.
Those that advertise a toy Chihuahua are actually a bit closer to the truth than other advertisements, as the Chihuahua is in the toy class of registered dog breeds.
Let's face it; Chihuahuas are adorable, but trying to make them smaller than they are meant to be, not only results in poor health, and shorter life spans, but also means a greater heartbreak for you.
