Long Haired Chihuahuas

Most people recognize Chihuahuas when they see one.

However, it still comes as a surprise to many to learn that there are long haired Chihuahuas!

Technically, they are called long coat Chihuahuas.

A pleasant surprise, is learning that they do not shed very much even with all of that lengthy fur, and actually are known to shed less than many of the smooth coated Chihuahuas.

The longer haired Chi has a soft texture to him and his coat may be flat or slightly curly.

The coat on his feet and legs will have a slight feathering to them, the ears have a fringe, and the tail is full.

His neck will have a larger ruff and the male's ruff tends to be longer than the females.

Many times the male will also have more over-all fur than the female.

He probably will have an undercoat, although not always, but it is preferred.

It takes about 2 years for the proper coat on your Chihuahua to fully come in.

You can tell that their coat will be longer haired while they are still very young puppies, even under 6 weeks of age.

You can see in the picture, to the left, the different coat types in this particular litter of Chihuahua puppies.

The one in the background is definitely long haired.

Their lengthy coat does not require trimming to keep it looking good, and the grooming requirements are very minimal.
