To know them is to love them, as the Chihuahua temperament and personality can be as frustrating as it is adorable!
They are funny, cute, charming, and they know it! They will also use this to their advantage!
Chihuahuas tend to attach themselves to one particular person, rather than the whole family.
They tolerate strangers, but are not openly friendly to them.
They will cuddle with whoever in the family is around at the time, but when they have their choice, they make it quite obvious who they prefer to be with and don’t care whose feelings they might hurt!
Part of their temperament includes, being extremely protective of their owners.
Though they are usually known for their bark being worse than their bite, they don’t like fighting between people and if you pretend to hit someone, there is an excellent chance that you will get snapped at, if not bit!
Chihuahuas aren’t playing when it comes to protecting their beloved owner.
If they believe that their owner is in danger, they will bite. Fortunately, they give a serious warning first.
However, if it is their own personal safety at stake, they run away and try to hide either in your lap or behind your legs. While they are busy relying on your protection, they will bark their heads off!
Chihuahuas generally get along great with other Chihuahuas, but not as well with other dogs.
The Chihuahua personality is one of authority! Not only do they like to be the boss, they make sure they are the boss!
If you own other dogs, no matter what the size, if the Chihuahua says no, she means it!
We had a large breed dog that only played and had fun in the house when one of our female Chihuahuas' “said” he could. Even if he wasn’t trying to play with her, if she didn’t want to hear all the ruckus, she made him stop playing! And he listened!
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like she would attack him, but she would bark and then stand in his way until he went and laid down.
If she didn’t mind his playing, then she would curl up on the couch and just watch him race through the house with the kids.
Their temperament is loving, attentive, and sweet to tiny babies, almost as if they are trying to mother the baby, themselves.
However, this same temperament does not hold true with young children, as a Chihuahua will try to avoid being around them. I believe this is because they know the potential of getting hurt.
They are known to growl at young children and may occasionally even snap at them.
The Chihuahua temperament seems to include holding grudges. They will pout for awhile if their owner upsets them, but with other people, they will ignore them for a very long time!
