The shape of Chihuahua ears are one of the most distinctive features of this breed. Giving your Chihuahua the proper ear care that she needs, will help to keep her healthy.
Cleaning them is simple to do, especially with all of the different dog ear cleansers that are available to choose from.
Chihuahua ears are folded down when the puppies are born. They start to stand up straight as they grow older.
A 7 week old pup may have his ears already standing nicely, but many times it may be several months before they fully stand up.
Sometimes their ears do not stand up properly. Your Chihuahua might have two ears that look different.
One may be standing up perfectly and the other one may be up with a partial flap hanging down and over at the top. Or both may be like this.
Luckily, since their ears do generally stand up, this allows air to circulate through them and keep them dry and ventilated.
Dogs that have long, flapped ears, such as Golden Retrievers, are much more prone to infections and other dog ear problems.
Part of your weekly routine will be to first check her ears. They should be a nice light pink to whitish color inside.
They should not have any type of odor to them. A little bit of wax or dirt may be normal, but if it is excessive, she may have problems developing.
To clean them, put a few drops of canine ear drops down into her ear canal. Gently rub the bottom of her ear and allow the drops to soak in.
Then allow her to shake it out. She may continue to shake her head for a few minutes.
You can use a cotton ball or cleansing pad to wipe away any visible wax that can be seen.
Allow your Chihuahua to shake her head some more, then lightly apply ear powder down into her canal. This is to dry up any remaining wash that may still be inside.
Weekly cleaning of Chihuahua ears is the best way to keep any problems from starting.
Also, if there are any beginning signs of an infection, you will notice this and can quickly get it cleared up before it gets out of hand.
