Many people wonder what typical Chihuahua behavior is.
That’s hard to put it in a nutshell, as varying
Chihuahua characteristics
cover so many different aspects!
Typical Chihuahua behavior almost seems to be inconsistent, as Chihuahuas are big time lovers and yet, almost vicious guard dogs!
When company knocks on the door, Chihuahuas will bark viciously, but then usually jump onto a couch when you allow the person to come in!
Then she will slowly investigate this person, without actually welcoming him into her home! Once she decides that this person is okay, she’s off to lay down while keeping a watchful eye on things!
Chihuahuas always want to know what is going on and they seldom miss anything! And they love the opportunity to alert you to the fact that they either see or hear something out of place!
You may think that your Chihuahua is in a deep sleep, but just try and quietly get yourself a snack! Suddenly, she is right there at your side waiting to see if you are going to share it with her!
And of course, if you are cooking dinner, she is right there reminding you that she wants some of it also!
Chihuahuas can be very picky eaters and refuse to eat certain types of dog food. This is usually shown by her nosing through her bowl, then pushing it aside and leaving the room, as if pouting.
When they are allowed to sunbathe, they seem to be their happiest and most content.
Even if it’s too cold for them to be outside, they will find a spot in the house where the sun shines brightly through the window and lay in the sunbeam.
Cuddling in your lap for hours on end is Chihuahua behavior that we all adore! They love to lay around and especially love to crawl under the covers in bed.
Chihuahuas are dainty and graceful and do not like to get dirty. If it is raining or snowing outside, they do not want to go out, even if it is to use the bathroom.
A couple of my male Chihuahuas even walk on just their front feet to avoid stepping in the rain puddles when they are forced to go out!
Typical behavior includes what I refer to as “the strut”. They just have this certain walk about them that is full of pride.
Many Chihuahuas love to be dressed up in clothes, and when they are, then the strut fully comes out and they walk all sassy and make sure that everyone gets a good look at them!
I guess the most consistent thing about Chihuahua behavior is that it is always inconsistent! Which is just another reason why we love these tiny dogs so much!
