What is an Applehead Chihuahua?

Is a Deer Chihuahua the Same Breed?

You may hear people talking about an applehead Chihuahua or deer head Chihuahuas and wonder what they are referring to.

This simply means the particular shape of your dog's head.

Chihuahuas that have an applehead shape, are exactly what they sound like.

Their skull shape resembles an apple, in that it has a distinct dome “roundness”, that is similar to the shape of an apple.

Deer head Chihuahuas have a more slender shape and a longer nose.

If you look carefully, you will see that their shape resembles a deer, hence the name, “deer Chihuahua”.

The famous Taco Bell dog is an example of the deer classification.

I have also put some pictures of both types on this page, so you can get a good look at them for comparison.

Both types are still Chihuahuas, not separate breeds.

However, The American Kennel Club only allows the applehead to be shown in the show ring, as they consider it to be the breed standard.

The AKC disqualifies any Chihuahua that has the deer shaped head, as that is considered to be a fault or defect.

If you do not plan on showing or breeding your dog, then the head shape becomes a matter of personal preference.

Both the applehead and the deerhead have the same personalities, characteristics, and traits.

Sometimes the applehead can have a soft spot on the top of her head, similar to a soft spot on a newborn baby's head.

This is called a molera, and is usually outgrown.
